Weather..

Well guys , remember I was saying our snow and such wasn't here yet but would be coming? ITS COMING!!! Saturday night into Sunday morning, ICE STORM!!! We may lose power! 18 years ago, we had a horrible ice storm. I had my wood stove operating on the greenhouse, but the blower won't work without power. Which means the stove will melt down!! And greenhouse would be lost!! I had a small 3000 watt generator. Brand new! Thought I was read. NOT! The generator had a fuel tank that only lasted 45 minutes. Had to stay up for 3 days fueling it. Outside you could gear the trees exploding from the weight of the ice!! We get ambient light from two near by towns. ( we are in the country) You don't realize how dark it can get when the whole area is shut off!!! We had a large red cedar ( juniperus viginiana) Outside the greenhouse, shop that was a beautiful old tree. As I was working to get things set up, I heard a crushing sound!! The tree didn't just fall over, it was crushed straight down!! The tree was lost😖☹️. On the third day, the generator blew up!! No heat for the greenhouse. Had to extinguish the fire in the stove! BAD!! we borrowed a tiny 1500 watt generator. But had to run 40 miles away to get a new one!!!😬 I was about half out of my mind after 3 days of no sleep!!!! When I got there to pick up a new one, they told me they would get to me in a bit!!! NO!!! I WANT IT NOW!!!!!! they got me one quick!!! Get the crazy guy out of here!! I drove home quick as possible!! The new one was 5500 watts with a 13 hour tank! Went to sleep after I filled it up! WHEW!!! our power was out 6 days!!! After that we bought another 6500 watt generator for the house also. Good move. We haven't had to use them all these years. But here it comes!! We are going to get it according to weather service!! Getting oil and fuel tomorrow!! Stocking up on canned food Saturday morning!! If any is left. People go crazy during bad weather events. Buy up everything. So the battle with mother nature begins!! After ice storm, the temperature is going to drop into the single digits, like 2°F!!! I will have to feed the stove , 6am, 4 pm, 10 pm, 2am... repeat! Until it's over!! Good thing is I installed a propane backup heater to help this year. I will update as events unfold. Wish us luck here at Morris Park In The Ozarks!! We're going to need it folks!! Stay tuned!!!

Trees exploding in very cold weather is usually because it is cold enough for the water in them to freeze, ice floats, it is not nearly as dense as water, so when it freezes it expands and blows a hole.

Not in this case, the rain starts falling and at 32° F the wood doesn't freeze hard. The weight of the ice makes it like a car being dropped into the tree canopy. Trees with small fine branchlets such as elm , some oaks that hold on to their dead leaves and conifer trees like the red cedar fill with ice quickly!!! When the hard cold hits after the freeing rain is done, the damage is already done before it. When you are surrounded by woodland, the branches and trunks busting, breaking are very loud! Like large caliber gun shots but hundreds of them, continuously!!! Here's the news this morning. Thunder ⚡lighting storms starting tomorrow night with freezing rain in the low 30°F to high 20°s F. Our area in the significant accumulation area according to the news. Up to1/10th of an inch of ice! This is quite heavy altogether on powerlines & trees and breaks them down. The hard cold will come in afterwards, when the sleet and snow come in. And drop to 2° F we won't get outta here for a day or two. 3 inches of snow on top of the ice. 3 inches may not seem like much, but on ice is very hazardous!! I am on a mission today to get as much done early as possible!! WE ARE IN FOR A RIDE!!!

Crikey, we sure do wish you luck. It seems like you thought of everything except food !! I always believed that everyone in the USA kept a panic cupboard full of home preserved grub in some type of fall out shelter in case of bad weather - like a root cellar??

Yes, we had bad ice storms in New England when I lived there as a kid. The ice coats the entire tree and all around every branch, just as if it were a popsicle. The weight of all that frozen water will bring down a tree, kill smaller trees when the branches break off and the cambium layer gets exposed to freezing temps.

Good luck @Euphorbia king fighting through this weather system's onslaught of ice. Your intrepid efforts will beat that cold, I'm sure !! 😊

Unfortunately, we've had to work. I don't get home till 6:30 at night. From what I hear, the main store her is picked clean!! We have some canned soup and such, but not enough. Going out to see what ever we can get. Unfortunately we don't have a cellar or basement. We are in a single level home. This is the time of year mother nature and I go to blows!!!

That depends where you live. Hurricane areas do keep some emergency stuff all year but we don't have root cellars to store food down south. It doesn't work well, you'd need to go too deep to get any cold and before you did you'd hit water !! 😄

Doomsday preppers do like you say and I've never heard of anyone but nuts and criminals having bomb shelters. We never have, as yet, (knock wood) been bombed to need those.
