What's happening in your garden today?

My mate used to tell me I should come when he played golf, "It's a really pleasant walk, Olly".
Not the way they play it North of Watford, the ice tundra has flooded.

Bet you notice the difference, I have tried wood of various sorts from sticks to logs. I think it is mainly the constancy of the moisture it promotes, but it all seems to help. Avoid sticks from pruning that are too fresh, you can find they start sprouting, I put them in the compost for six months, then lift them out with a fork and use as a layer between the wood and compost.
I did this same thing, Hugel kulture, when I set the beds up two years ago and when I moved them, all that was there was soil. It doesn't take long, evidently, for burried wood to break down.

No gardening today, after the "severe weather" warning given by the BBC for all areas last night.

Well, it wasn't quite that.

I often refer to our location as "The Tropic of Trafford," as the weather is mostly mild, we are protected by hills on three sides.

So this is what we got last night.

An inch and a half of snow.

The sky is overcast, but the air is still and the temperature is slightly above freezing.

Already the snow is starting to melt.

Well surely you had enough there to make at least one small snowman

More snow, it's +1c. It's sunny with nearly clear skies, but more snow is expected later.

I was reading the BBC1TV "red button" headlines with the sound muted. There was a programme on that was obviously about heating costs affecting pensioners.
They were interviewing a couple in their own home.
I notice in their lounge, the radiator was under the window, as they are in many homes. This I've always considered a stupid location, it's done to release wall space for furniture. But if this couple closed their curtains, the heat from the radiator would go up between them and the window. Despite double glazing, the air will have cooled by the time it reached the ceiling. The only heat in the room would be from radiation, precious little from convection.

Nothing, been asleep most of the day. Yesterday I ran the last couple of bags of manure up the garden in the wheel barrow, and as I walked away from it came over funny with a whizzing in my ears and couldn't walk straight. Held on to the greenhouse door for a minute, then tried to walk away and spun round and fell flat on my back, smacking my head on the path. Had to go down the hospital for a scan because I am on blood thinners and they kept me until 1.30 in the morning waiting for results.
"You can't go until we get your blood test results back."
"I can you know, but it's okay, I won't."
Never found out what it was, I suspect something in my ear canals because the bang on the head just about cleared it, but they ruled out all the really serious stuff, and I'm not bleeding on the brain from the bang.

Glad you're OK. You were lucky.

I don't help myself, I wear plastic slip-on clogs when I go into the garden, but the tread on the soles has long disappeared so I could slip on anything. I have some better garden shoes, but they're a bit of a pain to put on. I only wear them on, "unauthorised use of a ladder."
I've actually a pair of workman's boots with steel toecaps, they're an even bigger pain to put on.

Oliver are you on blood pressure tablets? I have been for ages, and have discovered that as time goes by our bp can drop as a matter of course, and it gets overlooked and can go too low. We wish you well - take care.

Well never mind their radiators, it's more important to know about even more snow! When you get your new spikes for your boots, you will have enough to make at least a medium sized snowman 😁
My house has underfloor heating so I don't bother with shoes.

A friend texted me that our Tractor Supply store had a cart full of pretzels, candies, and the like, all for quick sale at 25¢ each. So, since it's just 1 mile away, I headed over there. First I checked the compost to see the prices since I needed more and first thing I saw was bags of wood mulch for $2 each !!

I bought 15 bags, got two bags of potting compost and then checked the carriage with the junk food. Bought me a big bag of honey mustard pretzels for 25¢ !! And, they are wheat pretzels and absolutely scrumptious !! 😋

Then I came home and spread my mulch out where needed. Tomorrow I'm going back for 15 more bags. 😊
