@Zigs Thank you that's useful and quite possible, mine gets tomato fertiliser or Miraclegrow over the summer so not underfed.
Wow what a stunning plant, awwww the Caveman is adorable I need some of these little guys, I need helpers in my crazy cactus world hee hee and it’s growing and getting biggerI was given this cutting last year. I believe it's a type of Monkey Tail (Cleistocactus). Will be re potting it soon before it wakes up and before the Caveman tries to make a Thagomiser out of it

Ahh that makes sense, so my baby one will loose that feature, I just wasn’t sure when I saw it that’s why I thought I’d ask you cause about it, cause my big barrel hasn’t got it, but that’s so cool to see the different growing fazesSome pics of the Echinocactus grusonii at different stages. In the smaller pics you can see the aureoles (the pointy nipple bits) are spaced out evenly...

As the plants grow the aureoles align vertically to form the ribs, before that it's easy to confuse them with other barrel cacti.

As the plants mature the ribs become more prominent as they take on the classic concertina shape.
