The Cactus Thread

@Zigs Thank you that's useful and quite possible, mine gets tomato fertiliser or Miraclegrow over the summer so not underfed.

No worries Nigel 🙂 I'll take a pic of my bigger monstrose one tomorrow, and I'll see if I can find a pic of my Brother's one too 🙂

You've given me an idea to compare 2 identical subulatas over a year, one fed and one unfed, see what happens.

I've got a Mammillaria bocasana like your Ferocactus 😁

Couldn't find the pic of my Brother's subulata @NigelJ but I took a pic of a subulata cutting from last year (on the left) and the Monstrose one on the right. The monstrose one we got as a rescue but I think it's about 10 years old?

I was given this cutting last year. I believe it's a type of Monkey Tail (Cleistocactus). Will be re potting it soon before it wakes up and before the Caveman tries to make a Thagomiser out of it 🙄

Wow what a stunning plant, awwww the Caveman is adorable I need some of these little guys, I need helpers in my crazy cactus world hee hee and it’s growing and getting bigger 🤣🤣🤣😁😁😁🌵🌵🌵🌵🌵

Some pics of the Echinocactus grusonii at different stages. In the smaller pics you can see the aureoles (the pointy nipple bits) are spaced out evenly...

DSC08073.webp

As the plants grow the aureoles align vertically to form the ribs, before that it's easy to confuse them with other barrel cacti.

As the plants mature the ribs become more prominent as they take on the classic concertina shape.

Ahh that makes sense, so my baby one will loose that feature, I just wasn’t sure when I saw it that’s why I thought I’d ask you cause about it, cause my big barrel hasn’t got it, but that’s so cool to see the different growing fazes 😁🌵🌵🌵🌵

It should do if it is an Echinocactus, a lot of them look different till they get bigger 🙂

No worries Sarah 🙂

I thought I'd share this video, it's by our friend Ana who grows cacti in the Nevada desert. She did a small field trip to see cacti in habitat 😎

Although Ana is far away I do have one of her Rainbow Hedgehog Cacti in my Cactus House 🙂

Going back to the Echinocactus that we mentioned earlier, there are some more of these, one of them being Echinocactus platyacanthus. This is very slow growing but can grow bigger than a human and live about 100 years or more 😬

I have a few of them that I've grown from seed but they'll take a few years to reach saleable size.

You can see a large one on the Lliffle page -

I've been updating the cacti for sale section of my website over the past few weeks, still got a few more plants to add/photographs to take but it's getting there 🙂

This is one of my favorites, the sheathed cholla 😎

Clyindropuntia tunicata ziggys cactus nursery kent.webp

Needs very careful handling or the spines will grab you by the Warleggans 😬

Oh wow, I absolutely love the Euphorbia plants, the male and female I got off Daz is a Euphorbia Obesa/symetrica, il take a copy of this on my phone 😁🌵
