When to pot on your seedlings

It's always the thought "I might have a wonderful new type", but growers looking for them professionally grow a row right across a field on the off chance there will be one different, but you never know, Mr Cox had an apple seed grow in his garden.

These don't look that good but I potted them up when I moved the cold frame today, tomato seedlings that sprung up where the rats had been eating the tomatoes ans spitting the seeds out.

I wonder if these will come true to type or will they just be a mucky orange? 😬
Probably, we all have dreams of growing something new, and it does happen, but not often. Professional bulb growers grow seedlings on by the acre, then in a year or two walk the rows hoping to spot something, but mostly they just get ploughed in. Still, keep hoping, Mr Cox struck lucky with a seedling apple tree.

I planted a few about Christmas to see if the seed I had saved was viable, they have been in the propagator on my bedroom windowsil, but they don't look much better. Planted some more the other day, now is much more the time for the first ones.
