I was thinking today about some of the new features I'd like to get added to this site and one that kept popping in my mind was a garden tracker. I'm curious how many of y'all would like to see this added here, or how many would use it?

My thinking is folks would be able to make a list of veggies (or other plants) that they plant in their gardens. You'd be able to add the day you planted it and how long you expect before it should sprout, and how long before it should be ready to harvest, then the site could send you a notification when it's time for things to be happening. This way you could tell if your plants were "on time" or falling behind.

Something like this could be incredibly helpful for things like potatoes, too, where you can't actually see when they're ready.

Anyways, if there's any interest in this I could get started right away in bringing something like this to the site before "gardening season" rolls around this year.

Having only just woken up, I haven't yet given this idea much consideration at all, but my first thought is that it may not work across the whole board, and would probably be better for a smaller area than globally. For example, what happens with vegetable growth is very dependent on weather conditions for starters, which vary almost as much in the USA (so I understand) as it would between Australasia and the UK. It has to be more of a local scheme for the local gardening community, surely
Having said that, there are quite a few Texans who have joined in with our ever growing group 😁

That would be useful, IMHO, without, as @Tetters was saying, consideration of climate affecting the outcome much because... You go by what your seed packet says. The packet will tell you approximate time to plant outside for your climate zone, or, if started indoors, how long before last frost to plant indoors, and approximate harvest time. So you enter the date you planted and the alerts help you to not miss a harvest. Even if your plants are slow to finish growing, you'll know to be watchful.

I think I would use it just for fun, and I am very lazy about record keeping and don't write down when I plant or harvest. Never have kept a garden journal, ever. This would help me to keep on top of that without having to open a book and page through to find things. (which I have no interest in doing!!)

It's a good idea and this may work for some Mike but sorry, not for me. I'm not one to keep records and don't plan anything to do with my garden. Decisions are made as I go along and growing is from memory and natural instinct.
