I planted some Beets in a Raised Bed and started planting in rows.

Then said the heck with it a broadcasted.

Well the ones I planted in a row look great but the broadcasted not so good. HMM!

If I plant anything it HAS to be in rows. and they HAVE to be nice straight rows, so that a hoe will fit in between nicely, but Zigs puts stuff in all willy nilly - probably just to niggle me. The trouble is, his stuff does better than mine. That is just one of my excuses to leave the vegetable growing to him, while I just play with my flowers 1734912692846.webp

Every veg has it's optimal root run area. If you plant stuff too close together the plant is fighting for nutrients with the other one that is in it's way. I do square foot planting a lot, so long as the plant needs a foot of ground for it's roots, that is. Otherwise I try to follow the recommended spacing for that type plant. If I put too many too close, I just thin them later.

Oh Beets will be thinned for greens.

I reckon if you get them thinned and spaced right with the right amount of earth on they should do as well broadcast as in rows, I have never seen anything growing naturally in rows.
Yes maybe Olly, but I have a tidy mind. Not only that, on one occasion when I planted beetroot in blocks instead of nice tidy rows, I was hoeing the weeds out, and suddenly realised that I'd removed and killed half of my plants by mistake. 😧

I use my handy-dandy grapefruit knife when I plant in blocks, it gets right up between the plants, but I have raised beds. I can't see how it would word for weeding veg in the ground 🤔

Yeah - especially at my age 😂 getting down there is no problem but getting back up is another story.
I know !! I was having knee problems but since I started taking collagen powder in my coffee every morning, my knees don't hurt anymore !!. We, at 60+ years old, only produce 10% of the collagen we did when we were young, the collagen supplement works better than glucosamine condroiton for joint pain. Even my elbow where I tore a tendon doesn't hurt any longer !! Great stuff !!
