Amending the soil will not work in my opinion. just like it didn't work for that neighbour and the rhododendrons I told you about. As the tree grows its roots will venture further out into the surrounding soil and still have the same problem.
I would suggest putting this tree into a big pot with ericaceous compost, and placing the pot on a concrete slab or similar so that roots can't escape into surrounding soil. The avocado as far as I know (I have never grown one) does not grow very big, and a large pot should be ideal. Then add feed.
