SOME dogs ARE stupid ( lack of oxygen at birth or just bad minded) but, dogs in general are not stupid. Dogs which are thought of as stupid are actually highly independent. If they do not choose to do something, see no benefit in it for themselves, they will do as they please. What most think is a dumb dog is just stubborn independence which reminds me of Mules.Walked into a scrap yard once and a guard dog came running, growling. My mate bent down, slapped his leg and said "Good dog, come on then". It stopped and looked totally confused. I like dogs, but they are stupid.
Annie's story about the chained Doberman reminded me of one of my stories, 'Yard dog'
You can't force a Mule to do something, but, if you show them that you would like them to do something and you are clear, fair, kind and patient, the Mule will happily comply. If you ask a Mule to do something that they see no sense in, ( and they do think and decide what they believe is safe and easily done) they will refuse. This is why you can't work a mule to death like you can a horse. The mule will work until he is too tired, then he will stop and refuse to work any more. That's intelligence.
Dogs are pretty much like Mules.
