I was brought up in a town called Billerica which, I suppose, was founded by people from the UK who came from Billericae, in 1655. We pronounce it Br' rica. People unfamiliar pronounce itI'm interested in both
I used to live in the West Country where there are quite a few Viking place names, the ending ey or ney, meaning island. Places like Godney, Muchelney and Thorney. Then when I moved to this end of the country there are more of them (Vikings got around a bit) Here we have Sheppey and Graveney

I've been reading about Sheppey once known as Sceapig (Sheep Island). It was first invaded by Vikings (Danes) in 835 and was later used as a camp by them for over wintering. Kent, Essex and south east England suffered from their invasions.
